Shewee! Stand up and take control

Inventor and entrepreneur Samantha Fountain developed Shewee initially as part of her degree at university, the idea having come to her while backpacking around Europe. She patented her design in 1999 and entered the annual New Designers awards, where she won the James Dyson Product Design Award.

As Shewee Limited started to grow, everyone began to talk about Shewee. Immediately everyone could see what a success this type of product was going to be and other companies began to hop to the band wagon as the demand for the product grew. Before anyone knew, Portable Urinating Devices had started popping up all over the place!

On the market today PUDs come in all shapes, sizes and materials. There are flexible ones, there are hard ones, there are cardboard ones, there are plastic ones, there are huge ones and there are smaller ones.

So which one do you chose?!

We hope you choose Shewee as we know it’s the best…

  • Shewee can be boiled in temperatures up to 120 degrees Celsius making it easy to wash and sterilize
  • Shewee is made from liquid repellent plastic
  • If you hold Shewee under a fully flowing tap you will see that it will not fill up whereas most other PUDs do – this shows that Shewee can take the largest urine flow
  • Shewee is one of the very few devices where you don’t have to remove ANY clothes, or even lower your trousers
  • Shewee is one of the cheapest reusable PUDs
  • Shewee is made from polypropylene which is the most easily recyclable plastic
  • The solid plastic which Shewee is made out of means that it cannot go out of shape or buckle under pressure
  • You can keep Shewee forever without having to replace it
  • Shewee is one of the only PUDs to be invented by a woman meaning that it has been tried and tested more times then we can count, resulting in the perfect shape

Shewee isn’t a medical sanitary product for women – it’s a piece of essential kit that they are proud to carry!

 Shewee has been:

  • Supported by Bonita Norris, the youngest female Brit to climb Everest
  • Raved about by record breaking polar explorer Ann Daniels
  • Spoken about by woodsman and master of survival techniques Ray Mears
  • Endorsed by Richard Branson’s team, Virgin Trains.
  • Approved of by many Scout and Guiding groups

Not only this, but thousands of your everyday walkers, campers, hikers, festival goers, travellers, climbers, skiers, etc are constantly raving about Shewee!

Shewee has received hundreds great reviews on TV, Radio and in over 200 press reports in the UK alone! Even celebrities are shouting about Shewee! Fearne Cotton and Alesha Dixon used Shewee when they climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. The DJ Dave Berry has spoken about Shewee numerous times on his XFM show as well as in Heat magazine. Katy Perry talked about the usefulness of Shewee at festivals on Channel 4. Davina McCall tweeted that she wished she had a Shewee when she was stuck in a traffic jam. Even Konnie Huq, the ex Blue Peter presenter, was seen on TV standing up at a urinal with her Shewee. And if that’s not enough, The TV show Hollyoaks wove Shewee into one of their plot lines last year!

So what is wrong (in our opinion) with the rest…

Flexible ones:

  • They can buckle under pressure
  • Most need to be replaced every year
  • They can go out of shape, for example when left in a tightly packed backpack
  • Clothes still need to be lowered/removed
  • Most flexible ones cannot withstand high temperatures, so cannot be boiled to sterilize
  • Some say they have an antibacterial coating, but this antibacterial layer is no longer there after it has been used a few times
  • One particular flexible PUD (Whiz) was invented for the use of both men and women in order to take mid-flow urine samples, as a result the shape is not ideal for women
  • Some need to be screwed up after use to get it back in the container, it is hard not to get urine on hands when doing this
  • Some say the benefit of their product is that the plastic is hydrophobic, however ALL plastic is hydrophobic

 Cardboard ones:

  • Cardboard ones can leak through
  • Generally people find them harder to use
  • Clothes still need to be lowered/removed
  • They are not ergonomically shaped, they are either too big and bulky or too small and flimsy
  • It is less cost effective as they are not reusable
  • After use the cardboard ones need to be disposed of, a lot of the times when a PUD is needed this is not convenient
  • Some cannot be recycled as the cardboard is coated

 Other solid PUDs:

  • Most other solid plastic PUDs are very big and bulky as most were designed for the medical industry rather than the outdoor industry
  • They are not as lightweight or as easy to carry around
  • Clothes still need to be lowered/removed

HOWEVER, we think all PUDs are great as the aim of all of these devices is to make women’s lives just that little bit easier! We think all PUDs are doing a great job in their own way to market this type of product and make everyone aware that this type of product is out there, even if they aren’t as proud to shout about it as we are!
